I don’t do scary. Maybe that’s why I’m not big on Halloween. I can’t watch any movie that is remotely scary or a thriller. I can watch ghost hunter shows though. I definitely can’t do haunted houses. I went through a couple in high school and never again. I don’t think it helped that I knew some people working at one of them and they tried to scare the piss out of me. I can’t even read scary books.
When I think of Halloween (and Christmas), the movie that comes to mind isn’t scary or a thriller, it’s Meet Me in St. Louis. I know, but if you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I mean. Tootie and Agnes, the youngest daughters, dress up as adults with help from their family, then meet the other kids outside. Tootie “kills” a neighbor, the kids have a huge bonfire and seem to burn whatever they can find, and generally create havoc. It’s nothing like Halloween now. It’s actually kinda creepy, which is impressive in itself considering the rest of the movie. Tootie (played by Margaret O’Brien) was an odd child anyways, so it makes the scene even better.
“I expect she won’t live through the night. She has four fatal diseases.”
“And it only takes one.”
“But she’s gonna have a beautiful funeral in a cigar box my Papa gave me, all wrapped in silver paper.”
“That’s the way to go if you have to go.”
“Oh, she has to go.”
–Tootie (Margaret O’Brien) speaking about her doll to Mr. Neely (Chill Wills)
