Saturday afternoon I headed to Santa Ana for another round of Bloggers Giving Back. Last month we brought clothes to donate to non-profits. This time, we made care packages for deployed service members. When they announced last time that we would be doing this, all us military wives were like ‘yeah! we’ll show them what’s up! we are expert care package makers!’. Umm, yeah, they showed me!
The event was held at Great Over Good. We had pizza, wine, and popcorn. These are my kind of girls! We picked a person on AnySolider.com (I used AnyMarine.com, but there’s also AnySailor.com, etc.) to send our box too. They had a blurb talking about where they were and what they needed, so it was easy to shop for them. I picked a small unit from an air wing and my decision was based entirely on how many other people had requested their address. I have only ever sent care packages to my husband. A time or two, he would mention that a guy in his unit wasn’t getting any mail, so I’d send them a box too, but I’ve never send a complete stranger a box. The shopping part was easy – magazines, energy drinks, smokeless chewing tobacco (they requested that), snacks, and toiletries. Our hostesses provided candy to pack as well and all the items we needed to decorate and pack our boxes.
I’ve not a crafty kind of person, so I’ve never decorated a care package before. I know a lot of women decorate them or send themed boxes and it’s cute, but my husband could care less. I find it funny that it’s the first decorated care package I’ve sent and it didn’t go to my husband. I decorated though. My kids drew pictures of tanks and helicopters and other random objects (I’m not good at deciphering my 5 year old’s drawings). I also included a card with a long, rambling explanation of who I was and why I sent them a box. Poor guys are going to be like what? I included my blog business card though, so they can totally stalk me.
