Saturday night, we successfully pulled off a surprise birthday party for my husband.
A couple weeks ago, I sent out a Facebook messages to everyone, inviting them to our house for a party for him. I said that it would be fun for it to be a surprise, so don’t mention it to him, but if he finds out anyway, it won’t be the end of the world. One of his friends offered to have it at his house, since it was bigger, and I gladly agreed.
On Friday, his friend started messaging me about how to get him to their house on Saturday night. He suggested they go golfing and then afterwards, they would just naturally end up at their house. Sounded good to me! Well, then he gets right back to me and says that the husband says we are all going to Pomona for the day. That was news to me. We then spent the next few hours messaging each other, while he was talking to the husband and I was unsuccessfully trying to call my mother-in-law, who was at my house. We finally got it all figured out though. The plan was for the guys to go golfing and then for all of us to meet up at their house for dinner.
His mom and I spent all day Saturday shopping and preparing. We went to Smart and Final (great store, why have I never shopped there before?) to buy everything we needed for the nacho bar. They sell bulk food items there and it was a lot easier to buy a 6 lb can of nacho cheese than it was to somehow melt that much cheese ourselves. We got everything prepped and cooked and headed out.
We got to their house around 4, cooked some more and got it all set up. People started arriving. The kids had a big plan to jump out and surprise him, but when we finally got the text that they were 2 minutes out, the kids we could find were too busy playing to be bothered. He walked in the door and gave me a hug. Then, we rounded the corner and walk into a loud, kitchen full of people. The lady of the house shouted Happy Birthday! He looked surprised, but said thanks. Then he noticed the signs the kids made hanging up and the balloons, and he said ‘Wait. What? You’re serious’. Totally surprised. He said he thought there were a lot of cars when he pulled up, but just figured whatever.
The majority of his local friends were there, as well as wives and kids. We did sing Happy Birthday to him and he blew out his candles. He couldn’t figure out how we pulled it off. When he was told it was all me, he was just like how did you manage to do it here and get all these people here? There were people there that I didn’t know. He was thankful that we went through all the trouble.
Now, for that nacho bar. We set it up outside (California in January!), so this is the only picture I had. We weren’t going for pretty, we were going for easy. It was a big hit and everyone seemed to like it!
