I am big on saving money, especially when it comes to our grocery bill. With two little kids, one who seems to be a bottomless pit, we buy a lot of groceries. I do my best to coupon and shop the sales, but sometimes you just need a better grocery store, you know? Earlier this year, I discovered Smart & Final. I had never heard of the store before we moved here and honestly, I didn’t know it was a grocery store. When we had my husband’s surprise party in January, I needed to buy a lot of food. I don’t have a membership to any of the warehouse stores, but then someone mentioned Smart & Final. Sure enough, they sell items in bulk! We bought everything we needed for his party that day. They don’t only sell bulk items though, they have a huge selection of products, from produce to meat, and everything else in between. They are a warehouse club, just without the membership.
When I need to buy items in larger sizes, like things for the kids lunches, I’ll run to there to pick it up. When I was in there the last time, I figured I might as well just save time and grab the few groceries I needed. First of all, just let me say their produce section is to die for! I’ve never seen such a pretty produce display in a grocery store. Some of the things I needed that day, were sandwich stuff. We eat a lot of sandwiches, between meals, snacks, and packing lunches for school. I ended up grabbing the First Street brand items and I liked that the meat and cheese were in bigger packages without being ridiculously huge. You know what I mean? We may eat a lot of sandwiches, but we can only eat so much before it goes bad. I grabbed the stuff I normally buy as well, just in case someone didn’t like the new kind.
When I got home, of course someone was hungry, so I made her a turkey sandwich. I normally buy Oscar Mayer turkey, so I was surprised to see the First Street turkey seemed to be a lot meatier. No pun intended. I also noticed the First Street brand Buttermilk bread I bought was thicker than the Orowheat Buttermilk bread we like. The husband saw me making a sandwich, so naturally, he wanted one too. I made one using the bread and turkey I already had on hand. I think it’s safe to say the sandwich made from the First Street items is a bit juicier. For my sandwich, I used:
2 pieces (3 oz) of the First Street Bakery Wide Pan Buttermilk Bread
3 slices (3 oz) of First Street Turkey Breast
1 slize (1 oz) First Street Natural Mild Cheddar Sliced Cheese
1 tbsp First Street Yellow Mustard
Assemble and Enjoy!
If you haven’t checked out Smart & Final, I highly recommend it, especially if you are looking to save a little more without too much extra work. Go check out the new store opening in Vista, California on May 15 at 1845 W. Vista Way.
